Subject: What is Fascism? A refresher for some on these boards

Perhaps they have forgotten or didn't know:

"October 26, 2024
Heather Cox Richardson

Beginning in 1943, the War Department published a
series of pamphlets for U.S. Army personnel in the
European theater of World War II. Titled Army Talks,
the series was designed “to help [the personnel] become
better-informed men and women and therefore better
soldiers.”

On March 24, 1945, the topic for the week was
“FASCISM!”

“You are away from home, separated from your families,
no longer at a civilian job or at school and many of
you are risking your very lives,” the pamphlet
explained, “because of a thing called fascism.” But,
the publication asked, what is fascism? “Fascism is not
the easiest thing to identify and analyze,” it said,
“nor, once in power, is it easy to destroy. It is
important for our future and that of the world that as
many of us as possible understand the causes and
practices of fascism, in order to combat it.”

Fascism, the U.S. government document explained, “is
government by the few and for the few. The objective is
seizure and control of the economic, political, social,
and cultural life of the state.” “The people run
democratic governments, but fascist governments run the
people.”

“The basic principles of democracy stand in the way of
their desires; hence—democracy must go! Anyone who is
not a member of their inner gang has to do what he’s
told. They permit no civil liberties, no equality
before the law.” “Fascism treats women as mere
breeders. ‘Children, kitchen, and the church,’ was the
Nazi slogan for women,” the pamphlet said.

Fascists “make their own rules and change them when
they choose…. They maintain themselves in power by use
of force combined with propaganda based on primitive
ideas of ‘blood’ and ‘race,’ by skillful manipulation
of fear and hate, and by false promise of security. The
propaganda glorifies war and insists it is smart and
‘realistic’ to be pitiless and violent.”

Fascists understood that “the fundamental principle of
democracy—faith in the common sense of the common
people—was the direct opposite of the fascist principle
of rule by the elite few,” it explained, “[s]o they
fought democracy…. They played political, religious,
social, and economic groups against each other and
seized power while these groups struggled.”

Americans should not be fooled into thinking that
fascism could not come to America, the pamphlet warned;
after all, “[w]e once laughed Hitler off as a harmless
little clown with a funny mustache.” And indeed, the
U.S. had experienced “sorry instances of mob sadism,
lynchings, vigilantism, terror, and suppression of
civil liberties. We have had our hooded gangs, Black
Legions, Silver Shirts, and racial and religious
bigots. All of them, in the name of Americanism, have
used undemocratic methods and doctrines which…can be
properly identified as ‘fascist.’”

The War Department thought it was important for
Americans to understand the tactics fascists would use
to take power in the United States. They would try to
gain power “under the guise of ‘super-patriotism’ and
‘super-Americanism.’” And they would use three
techniques:

First, they would pit religious, racial, and economic
groups against one another to break down national
unity. Part of that effort to divide and conquer would
be a “well-planned ‘hate campaign’ against minority
races, religions, and other groups.”

Second, they would deny any need for international
cooperation, because that would fly in the face of
their insistence that their supporters were better than
everyone else. “In place of international cooperation,
the fascists seek to substitute a perverted sort of
ultra-nationalism which tells their people that they
are the only people in the world who count. With this
goes hatred and suspicion toward the people of all
other nations.”

Third, fascists would insist that “the world has but
two choices—either fascism or communism, and they label
as ‘communists’ everyone who refuses to support them.”

It is “vitally important” to learn to spot native
fascists, the government said, “even though they adopt
names and slogans with popular appeal, drape themselves
with the American flag, and attempt to carry out their
program in the name of the democracy they are trying to
destroy.”

The only way to stop the rise of fascism in the United
States, the document said, “is by making our democracy
work and by actively cooperating to preserve world
peace and security.” In the midst of the insecurity of
the modern world, the hatred at the root of fascism
“fulfills a triple mission.” By dividing people, it
weakens democracy. “By getting men to hate rather than
to think,” it prevents them “from seeking the real
cause and a democratic solution to the problem.” By
falsely promising prosperity, it lures people to
embrace its security.

“Fascism thrives on indifference and ignorance,” it
warned. Freedom requires “being alert and on guard
against the infringement not only of our own freedom
but the freedom of every American. If we permit
discrimination, prejudice, or hate to rob anyone of his
democratic rights, our own freedom and all democracy is
threatened.”

Yup, and that's what my father taught me fascism was,
and what to look for. He knew. He fought it before I was
born.

Mom's still alive, over 90 now, and remembers all too
well. She calls me very freaked out realizing herself,
from what she saw as a young girl, that this guy is the
same damn thing our country fought way back then.

Mom was there while it happened.
I would suggest if you have any elders left over 90,
talk to them.

just because "you" say it's failing doesn't mean it
is..it just means you want it to.

Certainly hasn't escaped my mom who was alive in WWII.

Again, an attempt to reframe the narrative as a
"failure" instead of a valid alarm it is. It's a common
propaganda tool.

Just like attempting to create the illusion that Trump
is winning, whether he is or not, so he can claim
there's no way he could have lost later (even when he
does). Everyone knows he's going to do that just like
last time.

propaganda bullshit..and you pushing that dung again.

There have been murmurs of it for quite some time. I'm
glad they're saying it outloud now.

which you and others just can't understand for some reason.

"Again, an attempt to reframe the narrative as a

Hogwash

the reality of Trump's threat is real, but AGAIN, if voters don't resonate with the
claim and it isn't persuading voters NOT TO VOTE FOR TRUMP, the candidate
needs to pivot and address those issues that Trump & independent voters DO
resonate with and CAN persuade voters, ie Trump's policy plans and how horrible
they will likely be for many if not most people living in the US, ie, his economic
plans, as well as abortion and all the rest.

it is ridiculous she wants to reframe this as if i’m the only one saying
the fascism message is failing even with all the articles saying the
fascism message is failing. another example of how she only hears what
she wants to hear and anything else in the mainstream media must be
propaganda

You work that message into your posts every time though,
as if repeating it over and over will make it true.

You talk of "media" all the time..talk to "people".

those i interact with provide a better sample of how people across our
country feel about the issues than large polls of thousands of people

Poll formulas can be off.
Polls can be "cherry-picked"
They can be even bought (rarer) for political agendas
and woven into "averages" to create a false picture.
People sometimes give false answers themselves to
pollsters. I have to wonder if 12% of those people in
your poll also are certified to operate a nuclear
submarine.

Polls have been very off for some time.
I think they are way off again based on polls vs.
primary election results (skewed 5-15 pts off actual
votes).
Polls should not be used as fact-based evidence.

I think it's damn foolish to believe them at this time
in history, or give them too much weight or
credibility.

So, they don't really say shit at this point. I'll wait
for actual results of actual votes to come in at this
point.

not saying polls have any accuracy, just saying it seems damned foolish to
think talking to people provides any better insight into the several ways
hundred million people of this country. a good example would be how you
keep telling us how well your family is doing when every poll shows the
majority of people say they were better off under trump. look beyond your
small world sometime

so, for you..the internet is king and does not lie to
you ever.

I stand by my own methods and perspective. They've
served me well over the years, much better than just
the "internet" and polls.

And yes, you may not want to believe it, but family
members I've talked to ...from all over the
country...are doing better than they were 4 yrs ago.
From various states, different professions/jobs,
different ages. It's a very large family.

I'm sorry if you are not.
You have not changed my mind. I believe what I see and
hear from people I know over the internet and campaign
information.

I don't know you.
Repeating your mantra even though what I see is very
different from what you TELL me I should see, isn't
carrying much credibility.

Keep pushing that dungball for the cause, though..we
know we can count on you for that.

exactly. No matter how many times you or I or democrats in a politico article say
it, they literally refuse to listen to what's being said. They hear what they want to
hear in order to make the argument they want to make. it's almost comical, but
it's really bizarre.

an insufferable bitch toward those who see *at least some
things* as you do? Like, just maybe for a minute?

I mean...I wouldn't want to question a posting style that
works for you, but...constantly haranguing posters here
because what's happening *isn't what you want to be
happening* just may not achieve the results you're
seeking....

they are voting for.
So based on your question, you are saying that those
who support this particular fascist inclined candidate
KNOW who the fascists in power in the past were and what
they did and are STILL voting for this particular
candidate?

i’m saying the difference between you and half the people of this country
isn’t that they are confused about the definition. and there probably isn’t
a voter in this country who hasn’t heard trump called a fascist at this

why so many political analysts are saying it isn’t an effective campaign
