bird flu...and greedy middlemen...

Rising egg prices linked to bird flu’s impact on supply chain
by Filip Timotija - 09/28/24 4:16 PM ET

The rising price of eggs in the last year has been linked to bird’s flu impact on the supply chain.

Eggs’ price tag has gone up by 28.1 percent in the last 12 months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average price for a dozen large eggs was $3.20, according to the bureau’s statistics.

The spikes in prices occurred, in part, because of the high demand for the product, but also due to the bird flu outbreak at chicken farms in Colorado in July.

“Bird flu is the number one reason for higher prices, absolutely,” Phil Lempert, a grocery industry analyst, told CNN.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, has affected over 100 million in 48 states since January 2022, the data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed.

“Think about how they are housed: small spaces with lots of chickens,” Lempert said. “When one chicken gets bird flu, they’ve got to cull the entire flock. That’s the problem.”

The sickness of the birds has affected the total egg output, and lower production of eggs, in part, leads to an increase in prices.

“Table egg-layer facilities tend to be very large, and so you can lose a million or 2 million birds on a single facility, because this is a highly contagious virus,” Amy Hagerman, an associate professor of agricultural economics at Oklahoma State University, told NPR.

But bird flu is not the only factor causing the prices of eggs to go upward.

Emily Metz, the president of the American Egg Board, told NPR that “inflationary pressures” play a key role since fuel prices are higher, along with high labor costs and packaging.

“Egg farmers are price takers, not price makers, and the volatility that we’re seeing is reflecting a number of factors that are completely outside the control of the egg farmer,” Metz said.

because that article said bird flu and inflation combined to increase the
price of a single commodity, eggs. it sure as hell didn’t say anything about
the cause of inflation or greedy middle men.

you and the truth aren’t on speaking terms are you? lol

And Harris has a plan to start to deal with things like
this.

I haven't heard anything from Trump on the price of eggs
other than he's going to slap tariffs across the board
on everything to make everything more expensive (which
will increase inflation on our wallets).

point around how completely out of touch DJT is (this time,
with anything regarding actual, real American daily life),
you pivot and spew a nonsense line like this...about Kamala
having a plan for BIRD FLU?...

It's just so lame, dude...not quite as lame as when you
bring out your big guns and accuse us of being "dishonest,"
when you can't think of anything else to attack with...but
it's definitely right up there...

It's just astonishing how anyone can imagine anything

bird flu was "one" cause.

And since Trump dismantled the pandemic department when
he took office last time...just before a pandemic hit,
he hasn't shown his ability to deal with anything like
that.

You don't remember that?
Guess it wasn't making him money, or it was something
Obama set up ..therefore, he hated it.

a reminder article below about Trump's major mistake
and lack of foresight.

Why would I presume he would have any ability to deal
with bird flu or understand it's dangers and effects on
the country?

kamala has a plan for this when bird flu was the focus of the article

the article you posted said the price of eggs went up due to bird flu and
inflationary costs, fuel, labor, and packaging it listed. hell the article
didn’t say a damn thing about the cause of inflation or greedy middlemen
which is what makes red’s response so amusing

why did you post this article and say untrue things about it?

i did not say untrue things about the article...it clearly says...

"The rising price of eggs in the last year has been linked to bird’s flu impact on the supply chain."

and it says...

“Bird flu is the number one reason for higher prices, absolutely,”

it also says the price rises are due to ...

" factors that are completely outside the control of the egg farmer,”

like middlemen...

and finally it says...

"“inflationary pressures” play a key role"

i made an inference to the fact that bird flu and middlemen both helped drive inflation...bird flu definitely was a major factor in the inflation of egg prices...which you can argue against, but in my mind, it is true...so i said nothing that is untrue and you are lying again annd attacking the poster...knock it off...

you took my point that it caused the inflation of egg prices and tried to expand it to cover all inflation, something which is completely your own spin...

sorry dude but that’s bullshit. the article was only about the increased
cost of one thing, eggs and had nothing to do with the cause of inflation

the article also said nothing about greedy middlemen. the only part that
might include middlemen at all was “ Emily Metz, the president of the
American Egg Board, told NPR that “inflationary pressures” play a key role
since fuel prices are higher, along with high labor costs and packaging.”
and that sure as hell doesn’t support your claim of greedy middlemen

you may believe those things but that article sure as hell didn’t support
that which is why I asked if you read it before posting

red the questions you ask are mostly personal and frankly none of your
damn business. having seen the way you use what people share in your
personal attacks, hell no i’m not sharing anything

as far as what caused inflation, i’m not an economist but as someone who
reads most economists point to the huge sums of money injected into the
economy in the stimulus bills. more money in circulation meant our money
bought less. supply chain issues along with high energy prices due to
wars on the far side of the world contributed

now that i answered can you answer why you troll and attack anyone who
doesn’t follow the democrat party line? why make things personal and
always post off topic with your but trump, but trump, but trump? this
thread is a good example where you jumped in talking about kamala has a

ah, there we go...I'm a troll for asking questions and
pointing out things you don't like.

Typical, again..predictable.

"inflation" was a symptom, not a cause. What caused
inflation? Because it hit the whole world, and I mean
the "whole" world after the worst years of the
pandemic. Many of those causes like high unemployment
and several rounds of stimulus and reducing the fed
rate to nearly 0% at Trump's insistance, as well as the
shortages of all kinds of things during Trump's
administration and supply line disruptions (while
insisting to still apply tariffs that raised prices on
some items), are all things that contributed to
inflation by the time Biden got there...and finally
dealt with, because we all know Trump only makes messes
and lets others clean them up.

Middle men did indeed profit. Bezos made
billionos...oil companies were raking it in, insurance
and pharma were handing out bonuses like candy. Profits
from all kinds of corporations were ballooning to
higher than ever profits while people scraped to keep
up.

Why is that?

Stop for a minute and actually take a logical look and
stop just parroting maga talking points, that we know
are complete bullshit.

red pause for a damn minute and take a look at this thread. bopp posted
an article on bird flu and the price of eggs. he falsely claim it was the
cause of inflation along with greedy middlemen, things the article did not
say

so you jumped in saying kamala had a plan to fix that which made zero
sense because you didn’t read the article that was the topic under
discussion, typical of a troll. you jump in posting off topic, giving your
same but trump, but trump shit and making things personal about me and
blaming it on me being maga as you have just done

if you went back and looked at this thread you would see there was
nothing maga here, just me asking bopp why he claimed inflation was
caused by bird flu and greedy middlemen when his article didn’t say that.
trolls ignore the topic and focus on the person. almost all your responses
to me are off topic and seem to be just an opportunity for you to take

ryan is correct, you're being obtuse.

How about you pause for a minute and consider the chain
of events that led to increased prices of eggs and
other things.

I did read the article, btw.

You want so much to blame the Biden admin for
everything, especially inflation, when it was clearly a
whole chain of events starting, most definitely, in the
Trump administration.

And yes, Harris does have a plan to take on part of
those contributing causes..namely, middlemen and corps
who take advantage of situations like supply line
issues, shortages and bird flu, to hike up prices
beyond what is needed and pad their pockets.

Trump doesn't. He's destined to make the same mistakes,
and even more detrimental mistakes (like across the
board tariffs) that would explode the economy if
elected and carried out.

It's so easy to just yell troll when you don't want to
look at an issue.
