Subject: Woman whose post ignited false Springfield cat claim says...

...it was based on rumor...

Yes, it's true that some voodoo ceremonies use dead cats.

It's true that voodoo is widely practiced in Haiti.

It's also true that the story that inspired this racist
wave was based on rumor.

So...exactly *how much* reactive hysteria, would you say
is fair to be drummed up as racist bias against Black
Haitians from this? Hm?

None.

***

The woman whose social media post helped ignite false
claims of pets being eaten in Springfield, Ohio, said
Friday the post was based on a rumor and that she feels
remorse for the Haitian immigrants.

Erika Lee, a Springfield resident, recently authored a
post on Facebook, saying that her neighbor’s cat was lost
and she was told it was because the pet was attacked by a
Haitian immigrant.

Kimberly Newton, Lee’s neighbor, acknowledged this week
to NewsGuard, “I don’t actually know the person who lost
the cat.” Newton added that the cat’s owner was “an
acquaintance of a friend.”

Now, Lee, has said she was sorry about the way the events
unfolded, with the unfounded conspiracy theories about
Haitian immigrants amplified by both former President
Trump and his vice presidential pick, Ohio Sen. JD Vance
(R).

“It just exploded into something I didn’t mean to
happen,” Lee said in an interview with NBC News on
Friday.

Lee, whose Facebook post has been deleted, stated she did
not expect that local gossip would spiral into a national
story.

“I’m not a racist,” she said. “Everybody seems to be
turning it into that, and that was not my intent.”

Lee said she is mixed race and her daughter is half
Black.

“I feel for the Haitian community,” Lee told NBC. “If I
was in the Haitians’ position, I’d be terrified, too,
worried that somebody’s going to come after me because
they think I’m hurting something that they love and that,
again, that’s not what I was trying to do.”

Besides Lee’s post, other viral social media posts have
also fueled the false accusations. Springfield officials
debunked this week’s rumors that Haitian migrants were
eating people’s cats and dogs.

The city is still tussling with the fallout of the
unfounded conspiracy theories.

The Springfield City School District closed one middle
school and evacuated two elementary schools Friday. Just
a day prior, Springfield City Hall was evacuated after a
bomb threat was issued to “multiple facilities.”

Trump's immigration scaring wasn't doing well enough
and he needed to drum up some extra fear, pinning it on
the innocent Haitians to build up his numbers. Even
though A) they're legal aliens in Springfield and B)
there is no evidence of one of them eating any pets.

As has been presented here the originator of the rumor
has now said she had no proof, and that the only case
found was an American native born woman, not a Haitian.

But, the legal Haitian population is now in danger
thanks to Trump and his village idiots. If elected, he
will put us all in danger..again.

‘A piece of garbage’: Republican Ohio Gov. condemns
Trump-Vance false immigrant pet-eating conspiracy

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio on Sunday rebuked
the false conspiracy theories that have been amplified
by former President Donald Trump and his running mate,
Ohio Sen. JD Vance, about Haitian immigrants stealing
and eating people’s pets in Springfield, Ohio.

“This is a piece of garbage that is simply not true.
There’s no evidence of this at all,” DeWine said on
ABC’s “This Week.” “Discussion about Haitians eating
dogs is just not helpful. And, again, these people are
here legally. They’re here legally, and they want to
work, and they are, in fact, working.”

Trump and Vance have both tripled down on spreading the
false rumors, despite growing pleas from Ohio governing
officials for them to stop the misinformation. The
Springfield mayor has repeatedly said there is no
evidence to back the conspiracy.

“This discussion just has to stop,” DeWine said. “We
need to focus on moving forward and not dogs and cats
being eaten. It’s just ridiculous.”

The Trump campaign is organizing a visit to
Springfield, a source familiar with the matter told NBC
News on Sunday. Former GOP presidential candidate Vivek
Ramaswamy, now a surrogate for the Trump campaign, also
announced Sunday that he would host a town hall in
Springfield on Thursday.

Trump boosted the conspiracies most widely on the
debate stage against Vice President Kamala Harris last
Tuesday. And Vance has continued to defend the talking
point.

“The American media totally ignored this stuff, until
Donald Trump and I started talking about cat memes,”
Vance said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “If I
have to create stories so that the American media
actually pays attention to the suffering of the
American people, then that’s what I’m going to do.”

Following the comments from Trump and Vance,
Springfield schools have faced bomb threats, forcing
evacuations and temporary closures. Wittenberg
University in Springfield canceled all Sunday
activities after receiving email threats about a
potential on-campus shooting targeting Haitians.

With 51 days until the November election, these
conspiracy comments have led Trump and Vance to spend
campaign time shielding themselves from backlash in a
state that has been viewed as safe Republican territory
this election season.

“He’s going to do well in Ohio,” DeWine said. “I think
he’s always better off talking about the issues that
really impact Americans.”

This article above clearly explains the actual source of
this nonsense...should it be considered worthy input...

Am not surprised.

Cats come and go and travel.

And nothing travels faster than a scary rumor.

It's just......oh, my stomach. This might be a new record
set for the whopper perverse distance between a rumor
about something that was claimed to have actually
happened...but did not...and an effort being made to
utilize that complete fallacy and mischaracterization
*toward fanning the flames of racism*....

This is the abysmal normalized behavior we can expect of
DJT and the GOP...

Far as I'm concerned they've left descriptions of the
words "adolescent" and "juvenile" way behind. Their
behavior now calls for brand-new terms that haven't been
created yet, to describe the perversion of all this...

It just needs a thread of truth to make a net of rope!

Damn, I wish it was limited to the GOP. It's the human
condition.

I recently learned that a witch hunt in the Alsace took
out every. single. woman. in. town.

More than once.

And the Thirty Years war emptied towns of everyone for
a hundred miles.

People are really stupid sometimes.

"People are really stupid sometimes"

Sometimes?

When are they not?

to post wise and compassionate thoughts here, for
