(ABC news) Multiple people hurt in shooting at Georgia high school, suspect in custody: Sheriff EMILY SHAPIRO Wed, September 4, 2024 at 10:21 AM PDT·2 min read
Multiple people were injured in an active shooter situation at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning, according to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.
One suspect is in custody, the sheriff's office said.
Details on the number of victims and their conditions were not immediately clear, the sheriff's office said.
Senior Sergio Caldera, 17, said he was in chemistry class when he heard gunshots.
"My teacher goes and opens the door to see what’s going on. Another teacher comes running in and tells her to close the door because there’s an active shooter," Caldera told ABC News.
He said his teacher locked the door and the students ran to the back of the room. Caldera said they heard screams from outside as they "huddled up."

At some point, Caldera said someone pounded on his classroom door and shouted "open up!" multiple times. When the knocking stopped, Caldera said he heard more gunshots and screams.
He said his class later evacuated to the football field.
Apalachee High School was "cleared for dismissal" and all other Barrow County Schools are on a "soft lockdown," the Barrow County School District said.
"The Barrow County Sheriff's Office says this is for the safety of everyone right now. Please do not visit your child's school at this time. We cannot release students during a lockdown," the school district said in a statement. "We will let you know as soon as BCSO says it is all clear for dismissal."
Winder is about 45 miles outside of Atlanta.
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting. "His administration will continue coordinating with federal, state, and local officials as we receive more information," according to the White House.
Agents from the FBI and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are at the scene.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said he's "directed all available state resources to respond."
Kemp said he's "praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state."
In Atlanta, authorities will "bolster patrols" around schools on Wednesday "out of an abundance of caution," Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement.
"My prayers are with the high school students, staff and families affected by the senseless act of violence in Winder," Dickens said.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Such a tragedy - and am going to guess that the 14yo shooter was a white kid (yes, because how many school shooting have been done by children of color?) who was a loner who was bullied, with no friends and the gun was either his parents or his parents got him the gun.
When will the Republicans get the gun lobbyists out of their front pockets? Start by banning all assault rifles - there is absolutely no need for them in our country unless one is military or law enforcement. None.

The 14 yo will be tried as an adult. So the real adults fail him again, and continue their crimes against him. He is doomed to unspeakable horrors.
He had made threats of a school shooting a year ago, a truly disturbed child. What happened to him?

all good questions. And, I am not sure I agree with trying a 14 yr old as an adult.
At 14, they are still very much a child..as horrendous an act, this is not a human with full capacity thinking.
Waiting for answers for this kid. Did he get treatment after his first threats? Did his family poo-poo the danger? Was he playing out some anti-hero game in his head? Was he suicidal? Was he bullied or abused?
So many questions, and just tragic all the way around.

More info... This is all I could get off the site, the rest of the article is behind a pay-wall (and I'm not subscribing lol):
"By Rosie Manins 1 hour ago Marcee Gray, the mother of the suspect in Wednesday’s Apalachee High School shooting, has a criminal record spanning more than 17 years and four counties, court records show.
The 43-year-old has faced prosecution in Barrow, Fulton and Forsyth counties, accused of domestic violence, drug possession, property damage and traffic violations. She has also faced civil fraud charges related to a vehicle purchase and was in jail in Ben Hill County as recently as April, according to publicly available court filings...."
Sounds like this kid came from a home and parent(s?) where abuse, drugs, criminal activity, etc. was all present.
It's a good possibility this kid was either in foster care or other family members if his mom was in jail.
the article speaks only of this kid's mother and doesn't mention the father.

This article does show he has a father and was with him a year ago when questioned about online threats:
"Suspect previously questioned by authorities Gray was questioned by law enforcement last year regarding “anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting,” and the online threats included photos of guns, according to a joint statement from FBI Atlanta and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
But Gray denied making the threats online, the agencies said.
“The father stated he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them,” the agencies said. At the time, “there was no probable cause for arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action on the local, state, or federal levels.”
Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum released more details about the case hours after the shooting Wednesday.
“The FBI confirmed that they received an anonymous tip in May 2023 regarding threats posted to an online gaming site,” Mangum posted on Facebook. “In under 24 hours, the FBI determined the post originated in Georgia and the FBI Field Officer referred the information to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division for action.”
The sheriff’s office located and interviewed a 13-year- old boy and his father shortly afterward, Mangum wrote.
“The 13 year old denied making the threats online,” the sheriff wrote. “A thorough investigation was conducted. During the course of this investigation, the gaming site threats could not be substantiated. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office alerted local schools for continued monitoring of the subject.” (excerpt..full article at link)
So, it looks like..while Mom was in jail, his father had custody.

Certainly sounds like it.
Instead of asking where he got the rifle the state treats him as an adult so they have an sacrifice for rage. It doesn't protect students, it abandons health and safety to the gun gods.
