California is about to officially ban fracking. Kamala Harris would allow the practice nationally Story by Julie Johnson 9h 2 min read Presidential contender Kamala Harris said in a CNN interview Thursday that she won’t ban fracking nationwide. But her home state of California is about to do so. Oil companies haven’t used hydraulic fracturing to extract crude oil or natural gas in the state for at least two years, though the practice wasn’t officially banned. California’s oil and gas regulator is putting a final end to fracking in the state with new rules that go into effect Oct. 1. “There is no fracking going on in California,” said Kevin Slagle, a spokesperson with the Western States Petroleum Association. “Even the rigs that do that type of work have left the state.” Hydraulic fracturing is a controversial method of extracting crude oil and natural gas by injecting a mixture of water, sand and chemicals into the earth to break through bedrock. The fractures stimulate the flow of natural gas or oil. Critics of the process say that fracking can contaminate groundwater. The Newsom administration has asserted the practice worsens climate change. Chevron held the last active fracking permit, which was issued for a Kern County well in February 2021, according to records from the California Department of Conservation’s Geologic Energy Management Division. The permit expired in February 2022. “California’s toxic love affair with fracking is finally coming to an end,” said Hollin Kretzmann, an attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute, as part of a press release in July looking ahead to the formal ban. “It’s encouraging to see state regulators put people’s health and a livable planet over oil company profits.” Fracking is just one method of extracting crude oil and gas from wells, and it was never widespread in California, though it is booming in other states. Crude oil production hit its peak in California in the 1980s, when the industry reported producing over a hundred thousand barrels per day between 1981 and 1987. Production has fallen ever since. The most recent data showed oil companies produced 285,000 barrels of crude oil per day in June from California oil fields. Slagle said that California’s tightening policies for fracking have led oil production in the state to decrease “much more quickly than was anticipated,” he said. At least 75% of the crude oil processed at California oil refineries is imported from outside of the United States, primarily Central America and the Middle East, according to Slagle. The remaining 25% comes from California oil wells. In 2019, before she became vice president, Harris favored a ban on fracking. In 2020, upon becoming the vice presidential candidate, she said the Biden administration would not ban fracking. In Thursday’s interview, she told CNN in an interview that she would permit the practice. Slagle praised Harris for recognizing that fracking is “a critical process” for oil production. “We hope to see those words followed by action,” he said. I think it’s pretty clear, you don’t have to ban fracking to make fracking obsolete. Especially when one considers how valuable the soundbite is. And besides, there’s so many alternatives afoot that the return on investment will eventually fall behind other opportunities in the sector.. so there’s no percentage in Kamala playing that hand. All she has to do is favor those alternatives.. and let the market place find its way.

yes, and price controls? how does that fit your expectations of letting the market place find its way? they seem to be counter the one to the other ... the government determines the price of everything ... it is a command economy ... just like the old commie days when Mao was in charge ... five year plans like the old soviet days ... what are you people thinking? horse exhaust for brains? you can't seem to stay on one idea for a minute
