👆"This is on tens of millions of British phones.

Hard to overstate the impact of people learning their personal data is becoming
vulnerable - thanks to the government - on the very device that holds their
personal data.

BREAK: Absolutely horrific news for iPhone users in the UK.

Apple is removing its highest level data security tool from customers in the UK,
after the government demanded access to user data.

This is a move that Apple has never made before in any market.

Comparison to other countries' stance?

Impact on UK users' privacy?
10:05 AM · Feb 21, 2025

No UK customer data stored on iCloud will be encrypted, making it all
accessible by Apple, the Government, and - frankly - the most horrific hackers
you can possibly imagine.

Imagine the blackmail, extortion, and identity theft the government is now
bringing on its own citizens.

The above tweet should read “end to end encrypted” rather than “encrypted”.

Data will still be “encrypted”, but not “end-to-end”… and Apple will hold a
decryption key. This has the effect you describe, which is to make private data
visible to Apple, to governments (all of them!), and any hackers/insiders who
should ever compromise Apple in the future.

Your photos, bank details, or other personal information are either end to end
encrypted or they’re not.

This is a mathematical binary.

If the government forces a ‘back door’, then suddenly your information is
accessible. There is no third way. Either you’re safe or you’re not."

Well, I gotta say, as an Apple app developer I imagine this means
nothing.. nobody’s jumping ship. Apple users are dedicated. Which kinda
reminds me of the slowly boiling frog who just observed the water’s
getting warm.. but hey it’s fine.. just gets a tad warmer everyday.

As an Apple device user it’s very disconcerting.. but then when Tim Cook
went and kissed the Don’s ring the writing was on the wall.. all hail the
king, eh?

Keeping in mind Tim has to walk the line between the totalitarian states
they manufacture their devices in and the so called free first world we
live in.. the illusion the best and brightest lead the way is often
supplanted by the fact that everything must succumb to the lowest
common denominator..

Surely if Apple will let their guard down for the UK we ain’t far behind.

they tried to do the lowest common denominator thing...it sucks, just like the school system...everything for anybody...

personally, i would much rather have a stripped down OS, without all the crap they add in there that makes it bloated and slow...i just want the basic network stuff, notepad, preview, a calendar and basic mail program....maybe something like a basic paint program...

everything else should be an addon that the individual user can get at the app store if they want it...i don't want itunes, icloud, siri, books, chess, garage band, icapture, iphoto, news, photobooth, stocks, etc...those should all be addon apps...

I was in the meeting when Jobs announced to his team he
would not be leading them after the board of directors
had kicked him out.

I shivered as a palpable cold wind blew from the east.

In an instant, it seemed, everything changed.
