Drop Site@DropSiteNews REPORT: The Humanitarian Crisis in Southern Gaza
🧵 Drop Site News spoke with the Displaced Persons Shelter Committee (DPSC) in Deir al-Balah about the unfolding crisis in southern Gaza, where:
➤ Over 2 million people, including 1.7 million displaced, face catastrophic shortages of food, shelter, and healthcare and
➤ Aid theft and blockades have pushed the region to the brink of famine.
The DPSC is one of several informal groups representing the displaced civilian population. The spokesperson, who maintains direct ties with aid agencies and has intimate, on-the-ground knowledge, shared the following details: 👇🏼

I. Displacement in Southern Gaza
Area Affected: ➤ The details shared describe the area from al-Nuseirat in the central governorate to Rafah in the south, spanning 22 km in length and 3 km in width, totaling about 66 km². Ongoing Israeli military operations are steadily shrinking this already limited space.
Population: ➤ Nearly 2 million people are in southern Gaza, including approximately 1.7 million displaced from neighborhoods in northern Gaza, Rafah, and eastern Khan Younis.
➤ Most are concentrated in Khan Younis (Al-Mawasi), Deir Al-Balah, and Al- Zawaida, with 500,000 along the coastline and 100,000 trapped in Wadi Al- Salqa—a flood-prone region in eastern Deir Al-Balah.

Vulnerability to Flooding and Poor Land Conditions
➤ Many camps are located on clay or sandy soil, making them highly susceptible to flooding. 58 camps housing around 150,000 displaced people are in low-lying areas, particularly in Khan Younis, Al-Mawasi, and Deir Al-Balah.
Infrastructure Strain and Health Risks
➤ Existing infrastructure is inadequate for the massive influx of displaced individuals. Wastewater is spreading through areas like Deir Al-Balah, Al- Zawaida, and Al-Nuseirat, and rainfall is likely to exacerbate these hazards, particularly in coastal regions.

No Safe Spaces for Relocation
➤ There are no vacant areas to relocate displaced individuals. Israeli forces have declared sections of Salah Al-Din Street as military zones, further restricting movement.
 Inadequate Shelter
➤ Most displaced families rely on worn-out tents, leaving them unprotected against the approaching rains. While the Red Cross provides tarps, supplies fall far short of the overwhelming demand.
 Shortage of Basic Necessities
➤ Severe shortages of clothing, shoes, and blankets persist. Children walk barefoot in tattered clothes, and many women are forced to use prayer garments as their primary attire.
 Oncoming Winter and Escalating Needs
➤ With winter approaching, the lack of warm clothing and shelter threatens dire consequences, particularly in Deir Al-Balah and Al-Zawaida. Immediate interventions are needed to prevent further suffering, including rapid implementation of the World Food Program winter and logistics plan to repair roads, install warehousing, and expand platforms and staging areas. Video: UNRWA Section II: Food Security Crisis ➤ Decline in Bakery Production
Six main bakeries remain operational in southern Gaza, producing an average of 300 sacks of flour per day, down from 800 sacks before the crisis.
UNRWA@UNRWA In #Gaza, only 7 out of 19 humanitarian-supported bakeries are still operational.
• In Deir al Balah & Khan Younis, pictured, 3 bakeries are working at full capacity but could run out of flour within days. • In Gaza Governorate, fuel shortages have forced production to drop to 50%. • In besieged North Gaza and Rafah, bakeries remain closed.
Delays in fuel and flour deliveries are compounding the crisis, leaving countless people without access to bread. Immediate action is needed to support those in desperate need.
