The short answer:
After attacks from the PLO with the support of Syria,
Lebanon and Egypt, and with plans to war, Russia passed
false information of Israeli plans to further
destabilize the area.
Israel made a pre-emptive strike that became the "six-
day war" and Israel took control of Gaza, the West Bank
and other territory.
For the long answer from the Israeli point of view, see

from Brittanica, or Wikipedia, and one slanted to the
Arabic from Akira.

Did that sound as if Russia passed valid plans? That
was wrong. Russia passed false plans to destabilize
the area.
It worked. Then Israel won the war.

i was on a ship that got replenished to replace the
liberty. so why is israel after 50 years still
controlling Palestine? if i was in Palestine i would b
e fighting israel also.

what was that language... loftiest goal was to die as a
martyr killing innocent civilians? That hatred of
their neighbor was a religious requirement?
Wasted your and your family's life in hatred for 50
years?
Dude.
Liberty tragedy was wrong. But it is more wrong to
tether your life and your children's life, and the
future to hate.
It's not doing the Palestinians any good. For
generations they will not heal. I am the first
generation of parents scarred by war and I will die
with results of that misery in the story of my life,
and both of my parents came home with all limbs intact.
I cannot imagine the horror visited on the Palestinians
because they came under the thumb of those who benefit
from generating hate.
There has got to be a better way.
Surely, Jesus had something to say about it.
