The Malibu earthquake was the 14th seismic sequence so
far this year in Southern California with at least one
magnitude 4 or higher earthquake
Over the last 65 years in Southern California, Jones
said, there were an average of eight to 10 independent
sequences of earthquakes with at least one magnitude 4
earthquake or greater.

Although it is notable that we've had a few 'extra' quakes this year, it doesn't
appear so unusual in the long term.
The image is a map of all 4.0 quakes since 1975 within a bounding box around
Southern California. Quakes are colored by time, so event sequences will have
the same color.
Below is a count of all those quakes for each year.
There are some years with very large counts as they are aftershocks of even larger
quakes, such as Landers, Northridge, Hector Mine, Ridgecrest, etc... But when you
take that into account, there are years that have as many or more quakes than the
current year.

I would appreciate if that 7+ was not near Malibu or my
area, lol. I felt that one pretty good this morning in
Port Hueneme. I'm 6 blocks from the beach and a block and
a half from the port.
