Boise Fire hits 10,000 acres with no containment in Humboldt County

The Boise Fire burning in Humboldt County has ballooned to more than 10,000 acres after igniting Friday, making it the largest wildfire with zero containment currently burning in California.

The fire is burning in Six Rivers National Forest, approximately 5 miles southwest of Orleans, an unincorporated community along state Route 96. Evacuations are in effect for parts of Humboldt and Siskiyou counties; the latest information can be found via Humboldt County’s Office of Emergency Services and the Siskiyou County Office of Emergency Services.

The blaze began on the evening of Aug. 9 and is burning near the footprint of the 2013 Butler Fire. In a Thursday press conference, California Interagency Incident Management operations section chief Heather McRae said firefighters found old dozer lines that are being uncovered to use again; although brush has grown back in those spots, it’s giving them a leg up. Cal Fire currently has the blaze mapped at 10,205 acres.

“There’s been minimal fire spread to the east today,” McRae said. “We do have an infrared flight that showed that there is still heat around that edge, so there is still some potential for that edge to continue to grow. But it’s at a slow, slow pace right now.”

More than 800 fire personnel are at the scene, with many on the eastern edge of the fire that faces Orleans. “While there are few opportunities for containment in those areas, the objective is to keep the fire footprint as small as possible, and crews will take advantage of today’s favorable conditions to continue their good work,” the U.S. Forest Service Thursday update read.

The cause of the Boise Fire is under investigation.

the cavalry, huh?

Yay mother nature (for a change lol).

Some years ago, we had three large fires started by t-
storms raging around our neighborhood, and one was
approaching the ridge right behind our home.

We packed the vehicle, watched the plane dropping
retardant on the hill behind us...and they were losing
the battle..

Then another t-storm came over and dumped rain in
biblical proportions...and the fire went out.

Sometimes, you shake your head and go "huh" (then
cheer).
