'Megaquake' fears as tectonic plate responsible for LA temblor is same fault that caused Japan 7-mag jolt last week
Could someone translate???
Article is extremely short, but it appears to be warning us of something more severe coming.
I don't understand the part about "the same fault that caused Japan's 7M jolt last week".
Japan is on the other side of the Pacific Rim of Fire.
Do they mean, it is the same TYPE of fault system as hit Japan last week????
I have to say in my gut, I am concerned these two 5M's recently are a warning to us, and we are now going into another Full Moon high risk period.

"The tectonic plate responsible for the LA quake is the same one responsible for the japan quake last Thursday, sparking fears of a 'megaquake.'"
The 4.4 LA quake and recent Japan 7.1 are over 6,000 miles apart (over 9,600 km). And yes, Los Angeles is on the Pacific Plate, the same tectonic plate that is subducting under parts of Japan.
But this news story is not factually correct.
And in looking at things, the Japan quake was NOT on the same tectonic plate.
Japan is actually on the convergence of four different tectonic plates - the Pacific, North American, Eurasian, and Philippine plates.
The Pacific Plate is subducting under the North American Plate under northern Japan, forming the Japan Trench. It is also subducting under the Philippine plate to the south, out in the ocean away from Japan, forming the Izu-Ogasawara Trench, and further south, the Marianas Trench.
Further west, the North American Plate in northern Japan converges with the Eurasian Plate. The Philippine Plate also converges with and subducts under the Eurasian Plate, forming the Ryuku Trench.
The recent 7.1 quake in Japan was on the Ryuku Trench, which as stated, does not involve the Pacific plate.
For clarity, see the picture.
So, factually, the LA and Japan quakes are NOT on the same tectonic plates. The LA quake involves only the Pacific Plate, on a thrust fault formed by the Pacific Plate pushing against the North American Plate along the Big Bend of the San Andreas Fault. The Japan quake was on the subduction zone between the Philippine Plate and the Eurasian Plate.
Also, the way the sentence is structured, it implies that the (factually incorrect) statement that the LA quake being on the same tectonic plate is what leads to the threat of a megaquake. This is also factually incorrect. The megaquake warning was issue by Japan before the LA quake even occurred. It was issued due to historical quake patterns on the Ryuku Trench typically involving two large quakes close in time, and the concern is that the recent 7.1 quake is the first of two quakes in the next (current?) sequence.
All around, tabloid journalism worthy of being printed on toilet paper.

Thanks Brian I am not knowledgeable as many here concerning earthquake and tectonic plates types of earthquakes and so on. I appreciate your correcting my error in previous post in this thread concerning the tectonic plate and that it is a different one.
Thanks for the informative post!

Perhaps go with your gut feeling, it seems a lot of folks are expressing that in the chatter concerning this earthquake.

FWIW I went to the article which was originally posted on "The Mirror" and it reads as same tectonic plate and same fault simultaneously of which same plate and same fault does not sound right to me.... but I am not practiced as many here on the this topic and terminology. I heard that the CA quake in question was on the Elysian Park Fault...I don't know if that is right or not though yet it does not seem like the Elysian Park Fault is responsible for the Japan earthquake by the sound of it. So same tectonic plate but different faults.
EXCERPT: Elysian Park Fault is an active blind thrust fault located in Central Los Angeles, California. Approximately 20 km (12.4 miles) long, the fault is believed to able to produce a destructive earthquake of magnitude 6.2–6.7, about every 500–1,300 years, similar in size and frequency to the 1971 San Fernando earthquake or 1994 Northridge earthquake.[1]

EXCERPT: The Nankai Trough is an approximately 900km-long fault line along which one tectonic plate is sliding underneath another — a process known as 'subduction'. Megaquakes "generally happen at a subduction zone ... that's where you can have the most stress built up," Pascale said.1 day ago
