I'm in Newport Beach/Costa Mesa CA.

This is the longest quake I've ever been in. I've.....like over a minute. Shaking for me was not violent but light. But due to the length of the shaking, I'm thinking a BIG ONE just happened some place.

I can't see anything posted yet.

Stay Alert!

I am a LONG time resident of So Cal (I'm 67 now). I've been in my house for 30+ years. I'm about 2 miles from the epicenter. I was in perfect position to experience this, sitting at my computer desk in my front room working. That was such a huge initial shake that my mind, even tho I'm an experienced EQ person, thought it was a large explosion somewhere - that is until the normal shaking followed that initial hit. I've never felt anything like that. I've been through the Sylmar Quake, the Landers/BigBear quakes (from about 10 miles from the Epicenter), and Northridge. I've NEVER felt an initial shake like that, and I absolutely believe USGS is gaslighting. That was no 4.4

I'm feeling these.

They are light, but strong enough to make me fell a bit dizzy.

And they shake for a long time.

I thought the longer a quake shakes, the BIGGER it is.

4.6M seems to be pretty low Magnitude for such a LONG quake.

EarthMaster is showing a LOT of stations had this quake at a low 5M, even some 5.5Ms. So it really got downgraded by USGS, with no explanation as to why.

And now this quake has triggered some activity surrounding the San Andreas. Yipes!

EarthMaster really nails USGS screwing with the results. USGS has NO support for that low of a magnitude.....and they state so.

He mirrors my suspicions that we are BUILDING UP TO something.

A lot of pressure building. The 5M last week, followed by a huge swarm, and now this 5M ....these are WARNINGS for us.

San Andreas WAY OVER DUE to blow.

Full Moon coming right up to:

The next Full Moon in 2024 is at 2:26 p.m. ET on Monday, Aug. 19, and is called the Sturgeon Moon.

Get READY!!!

USGS is gaslighting us.

This was clearly a much stronger quake to be felt in San Mateo County and Way up in Eureka, CA!!!

no way it is was a 4 something.

It was obviously a 5+M!

Be sure and read the comments posted below his youtube.

People felt it WIDELY!

And, I really don't think this size quake..even if it
was a 5.0, would be felt that far north.

I did not feel this just east of Bakersfield, and that's
a whole lot closer than Eureka. I did feel the 5.4 sw
of Bakersfield strongly last week. It's possible they
felt something else up there in Eureka unrelated to this
particular quake.

If you watched the video, he shows the seismometer in Eureka. Yes, it picked it up in Eureka!

In the comments section someone felt it in San Mateo, CA.

"If you watched the video, he shows the seismometer in Eureka. Yes, it

I don't think that sentence warrants an explanation mark.

I also wonder, why would, as you say, the USGS be 'gaslighting' anyone?

Btw.. a teleseism is a quake recorded more that 1000km from its source,
and any eq 5 or above can be recorded worldwide.. so a quake just below 5
recorded 700 miles away is nothing unusual..

Picking it up on a sensitive seismometer is not the
same as "feeling it" by the population. we can pick up
a 4.5 signature in other countries that no one actually
feels here.

Using long distance seismometers is how they can get a
fix on various aspects of a quake and even how it
bounces off underlying earth structures.

I'm sure it felt plenty big enough where you are.

I once felt a quake at my house that I was sure was a
5.0 or bigger. It turned out to be a 2.5...but it was
centered on a small fault pretty much right under my
house. If you are close, they can feel quite large
indeed.

4.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Los Angeles
The quake was centered about five miles northeast of
downtown, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
There were no initial reports of serious damage.

Aug. 12, 2024, 3:45 p.m. ET
Los Angeles was rattled on Monday afternoon by a 4.4-
magnitude earthquake, according to the United States
Geological Survey.

The earthquake hit at 12:20 p.m. and was centered just
outside of Pasadena, about five miles northeast of
downtown Los Angeles, according to the agency.

The city’s Fire Department had begun conducting a
damage survey, Mayor Karen Bass said on Twitter.

There have been no initial reports of widespread
damage, said Margaret Stewart, a spokeswoman for the
Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters from each of
the city’s 106 fire stations were driving through their
districts to survey any effects, she said, and would be
able to provide more detailed assessments within the
next hour.

The earthquake was felt across Southern California,
with reports of shaking from Bakersfield to San Diego,
according to the U.S.G.S.

Also from Lucy Jones, USGS:

Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones provided information on the
faults in the area where the earthquake hit.

"This area has a network of buried faults, so it's not
something that shows up on the surface. The same
network was involved in the 1987 Whittier Narrows
quake, but exactly whether it's the same strand,
because it's complicated and at depth, we'll never be
able to say," Jones said.

She said in a tweet that this was NOT the Raymond fault
(just to rule one out).
https://abc7.com/post/44-magnitude-earthquake-hits-
highland-park-area-usgs-says/15177949/

It was probably not the Elsinore fault, either, as this
was a pretty much a pure thrust fault.

A thrust fault would explain why it felt a little
bigger than it was. Thrust faults (up and down
movement) have a bigger gravitational affect (throws
you higher up and down than a strike slip, or side-to-
side fault).
