I was on the front porch and heard that one coming. It was a very odd sound...oscillating, low base vibration and shook us pretty good even on our granite.
Funny note...my earthquake alert was flashing on my phone when I went back in the house "Duck and cover! Duck and cover!" (it was well passed by then lol).
Good to know it works.

near the White Wolf fault that produced a M7.5 in 1952 but does not appear to be on that fault.
5% chance that this quake could be followed by something bigger.
seismo picked it up good.

The Garlock Fault line has been active for months now, which to me seems odd.....a new phenomena. Now this 5.1M quake.
The Quiet Grapevine Area...suddenly not so Quiet Any more.
I've been watching this quiet (locked) area of San Andreas for months now, with movement to the north on the San Andreas near Monterey and Parkfield and movement to the south (San Jacinto fault) in LA basin. But this Grapevine area was eerily quiet. Now it is not so quiet.
There is still a large locked area on the San Andreas just to the north of this 5.1M.
Lets see we are just passing out of a New Moon phase, ....which means in a week or 10 days we will be in a Full Moon phase.
I'd say watch out for this upcoming Full Moon phase, August 19.
Too much movement (micros) going on all summer long, without anything really BIG. I suspect this 5.1M is a fore shock for something larger to hit at the Full Moon, August 19. Stay Alert. Be prepared.

was texting with a local friend...he said it made him drop his ice cream and he wanted to talk to the manager. lol
btw...it was a "thrust" quake from the area north of the big bend of the San Andreas (not the San Andreas, though). This is an area that's being folded and pushed up at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, just south of Bakersfield. There's currently quite an active aftershock pattern going on. Going to put on my seat belt tonight.

yeah, the northern end of that fault is referred to as the "Scodie Lineament". The southern segment (white wolf) moved big time in 1952 and the scarp scars are still visable above Arvin at the base of the mountains.
This is not where the danger is..it's that northern extension, the Scodie, which is so young that end has not broken the surface yet, and did not release energy in 1952. There have been a couple of 6 pointers from that area, and one day the Scodie lineament will move big and break the surface like it's southwestern end did in 1952.
"In March 1946 an ML 6.3[116] earthquake struck near Walker Pass (crest of the Sierra Nevada, due west from Ridgecest), with aftershocks continuing for nearly a year.[117] The 1952 Kern County earthquake (Ms7.5, Mw 7.3[118]), considered the biggest earthquake to hit California since the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, [119] occurred on the White Wolf fault south of Bakersfield, and likely connected with the Walker Pass earthquake via the Scodie Lineament.[120]"
Which fault actually caused yesterday's quake is still to be determined. There are a number of compression- type thrust faults called the Wheeler Ridge faults just above the bend, as well as a line of normal faulting that runs along the west side of the valley that define the western edge of the Central Valley/San Joaquin valley. Thrust faulting would indicate wheeler ridge type movement, and normal faulting (down dropping block) would be more prone to be the valley sequence faults.
Always possible it was an unknown fault this quake is illuminating, too. Happens all the time. There's a ton of stuff going on geologically in that "big bend" area down there.

Just checked USGS. Less than an hour since the main shock, and 54 aftershocks so far...

before I went to bed, there was a 4.0. It's quite a robust aftershock sequence.
That's actually a good thing, btw. What I worry about is when you get one of that size and everything goes quiet too quickly as if it's relocked and not done.
According to Lucy Jones via "X": " Dr. Lucy Jones @DrLucyJones I felt this quake for a change. A M5.2 located at the southern end of the Central Valley. It is near the White Wolf fault that produced a M7.5 in 1952 but does not appear to be on that fault."

Thanks I messaged my youngest son and daughter in law living in Frazier Park, and they said they sure felt it. I posted on groans on Aug 1st felt symps for this area, mentioned C Calif - it was hard to pin point- but had dream about my son relating to earthquake activity and post on dreams in May in response to Sher's posting. Got a few more baby pics too of Sophia, born on June 4th- such a cutie.

now the moment tensor and focal mechanism is changed, showing it is a "normal" ...or down dropping quake.
Weird.
I guess they got more data and revised the motion.
They've also revised it down to a 5.2 mw
