I got the alert in Ventura. Scared the living daylights
out of me. But I barely felt the quake. The app said it
was a 6 but it was a 5. Whew. I hope that's the end of
it.

Huge boulder falls onto I-5 after magnitude 5.2 quake strikes SoCal

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Lamont, Calif., Aug. 6, 2024.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake rumbled through Southern California on Tuesday night, sending tremors across the Los Angeles Basin and triggering dozens of aftershocks, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The main quake hit at 9:09 p.m. with a depth of 7 miles in a remote area of Kern County, about 17 miles southwest of Bakersfield. Shaking was felt as far north as Fresno, as far south as Long Beach and as far east as the Inland Empire, according to the USGS.

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake hit shortly after, followed by dozens more temblors, many of them with magnitudes between 3.0 and 3.5.

“We are seeing a robust aftershock sequence, with a M4.5 just 45 seconds after the mainshock,” Lucy Jones, a California seismologist who authored the book “The Big Ones,” wrote on X.

Just after the main quake, a large boulder fell onto Interstate 5, blocking two southbound lanes for several hours, according to CHP.

“Due to the earthquakes in the area, we are advising everyone driving through the Grapevine and other mountainous areas to do so with caution,” CHP said. “Large rocks, boulders, trees and other debris could have fallen in the roadway.

CHP Sgt. Michael Karr told SFGATE that the boulder was about 5 feet by 6 feet.

I got an alert too, but the phone was in the house and I
was outside.

The sound alerted me...could hear it coming. was a very
deep, oscillating sound for about 5 seconds before it
hit. We were about 34 mi from the epicenter here in
Tehachapi.
