Live Sierra storm updates: 145 mph wind speed recorded in Tahoe Basin By Amy Graff Updated March 1, 2024 9:54 a.m.
Conditions deteriorating in California’s Sierra
March 1, 9:55 a.m.
UC Berkeley’s Central Sierra Snow Lab on Donner Pass off Highway 80 provided an update on weather conditions as a potent storm slammed the Sierra on Friday morning.
“Conditions have already deteriorated this morning with gusty winds and significantly reduced visibility,” the snow lab said in a message posted on X (formerly Twitter). “The next 24 hours will be the heaviest portion of the storm.”
The lab had received about 19 inches of snow in the past day as of 8:50 a.m. Friday morning.
We have received 19.1" (48.5 cm) of #snow in the last day. Snowpack at the lab is now 102% of median to date.

145 mph wind knocks peak in Tahoe Basin
March 1, 9 a.m.
A 145 mph wind speed was recorded on Washeshu Peak in Palisades Tahoe ski resort at 7 p.m. on Thursday, the National Weather Service said.
Also within the resort grounds, 143 mph wind speeds were measured at 6:45 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. on a gauge atop Ward Peak.
The winds kicked up on Thursday night as a fierce, cold winter storm bore down on California’s Sierra Nevada.
Justin Collins, a forecaster with the weather service’s Reno office, said the average wind speed was 120 mph last night on the Sierra crest in the Palisades area.
“This is not something you see every day,” Collins said. “But with these big, strong cold storms, it’s possible to get wind speeds that high.”
Winds continued to gust Friday morning, and Collins said readings of 120 mph to 130 mph were being taken along the Sierra crest in the Tahoe Basin.
“There’s going to be one more frontal push tonight and that might kick up winds again,” he said. “We might see another spike in the winds anytime between 9 p.m. and midnight.”
The fastest wind speed ever recorded in California was a 199 mph gust measured in 2017 on Ward Peak, SFGATE reported previously.
“I don’t know if it’ll get that close this time,” Collins said. “I would say possibly another 140 or 150 mph gust, but I’m not sure about that — but in terms of 190, I don’t know if this storm will get there.”
With the high winds in the forecast Friday, Palisades Tahoe announced the resort would be closed. “Due to intense snowfall, winds over 100 mph and low visibility, both Palisades and Alpine will be closed today,” the resort said on social media at 6:19 a.m.

190-mph wind gust pummels Tahoe Basin, nearly breaks record By Amy Graff March 2, 2024
A 190-mph gust pummeled a mountain peak in California’s Tahoe Basin Friday night, as powerful winds raked the Sierra Nevada Range amid a fierce winter storm.
That wind would “most likely knock you over,” said Collin McKeller, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Reno office.
The wind was recorded on an 8,700-foot peak in Tahoe Palisades ski resort at 10:15 p.m. It nearly broke the 199-mph record for the fastest-ever recorded wind in California, measured on Ward Mountain in Palisades.
“The record was set only seven years ago in 2017 at an adjacent peak,” Jan Null, a meteorologist who runs the private forecasting service Golden Gate Weather Services, told SFGATE. “We have been seeing gusts over 150 mph over the Sierra in recent years. I think we've gotten better at documenting them.”
The high winds kicked up Friday night, and there were several gusts that measured over 100 mph, McKeller said. The system brought blizzard conditions overnight, with snowfall rates up to 5 inches an hour.
“It was a serious winter blizzard,” Null said. “The combination of wind and snow is what makes it a blizzard.”
Interstate 80 remained closed as of 8 a.m. Saturday. “Crews are out this morning evaluating conditions while also working on vehicle recovery from yesterday's spin outs,” Caltrans said on X, formerly Twitter. Chain controls are in place on U.S. Route 50. (Get the latest information from the Caltrans website.)

The weather service’s Weather Prediction Center expects that locations above 5,000 feet across the Sierra will generally pick up 5 to 12 feet of snow through Sunday. As of Saturday morning, the weather service had not issued any snowfall totals for the overnight snow; Null said it would be tricky to nail those down.
“Trying to find the place that got 10 feet versus 4 feet, it's really difficult in a storm like this with all the wind,” Null said.
The most severe weather conditions associated with this storm had passed by Saturday morning, but more snow is expected Saturday and Sunday.
“There's going to be another good 24 hours of snow, but it's going to be more off and on,” Null said.
“It will start to slowly become less persistent later on today,” McKeller said, “but it’s going to stay pretty consistent with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour through the afternoon at least.”

That's a hair ruffler, for sure. Just to report from the "southern" sierras...gentle rain, a reasonable west wind. Seems like (at least so far), it's cutting us a little break on this end.
But, the snow and frontal stuff isn't due to hit here until later tonight.

up here in norcal by the coast, we had crazy lightning and thunder last night, right overhead...unusual for this area by the coast...and an inch or so of graupel, a pelletized snow that isn't quite hail...bodhi crawled under the bed for a while to ride it out and then after a really loud clap of thunder, went to hunker down in the shower stall...

Shower stall?
One smart critter. A tub or shower stall is where people without hidey-holes were told to go during tornadoes.
