A series of earthquakes struck off the coast of Eureka Calif., February 29, 2024

A series of eight earthquakes struck off the coast of Northern California late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquakes hit roughly 170 miles off the coast of Eureka in Humboldt County ranged in size from magnitudes 3.3 to 4.9. The quakes occurred within a about four-hour time period, with the first quake, a magnitude 3.6, striking at 11:08 p.m. on Wednesday, and the most recent one a magnitude 4.5 quake hitting at 2:49 a.m. Thursday.

Only three people reported feeling shaking from the magnitude 4.9 quake that struck at 2:28 a.m. with the USGS Felt Report, where people can self report shaking.
