A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck in Lake County on Friday afternoon, giving the far North Bay a shake, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake hit at 1:28 p.m. with a depth of 1.4 miles nearly 4 miles northwest of Cobb, a community just south of Clear Lake. The epicenter was near the Geysers geothermal field, which includes several geothermal power plants.

Earthquakes are common in this area. “The major seismic hazards in the region are from large earthquakes occurring along regional faults that are located miles away from the geothermal field, such as the San Andreas and Healdsburg-Rodgers Creek faults,” the USGS said. “However, activities associated with the withdrawal of steam for producing electric power cause or induce small quakes to occur in the field.”

More than 230 people reported feeling shaking with the USGS.

The type of quake is called a "normal". There doesn't
appear to be much shift n/s or e/w. It was a block of
earth that dropped down.

Given the geothermal activity in this area, the hot
springs, etc., and the shallowness of this quake, I
would highly suspect something going on with the
underlying plumbing.

When hot water circulates through the earth, it does
not stay static. It weakens rocks, creates cave
systems, sink holes, or blocks the steam/hot water
circulatory system changing it. Geothermal area
plumbing is always evolving due to the same.

That's my impression of this quake based on regional
plumbing/hot springs/shallowness and lack of lateral
movement. It's not an abnormal occurance for this
region (or any active geothermal area).
