U.S. Geological Survey

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit Southern California at 7:43p.m. on Wednesday evening, with the epicenter 3 kilometers southwest of San Bernardino, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake was initially reported as a magnitude 4.5 temblor, and later downgraded.

There were "no immediate reports of damage or injuries," said the San Bernardino County Fire Department on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The quake was felt widely across Southern California, from Palmdale and Barstow, throughout the greater Los Angeles area, to Orange County and San Diego, according to the USGS's "Did You Feel It?" map, which allows residents to report their experience of the temblor.

This is a breaking news story.

Rare to have one hit when everyone was home at same
time, fun to teach kids in real time how to approximate
how big and how far.
This one called as local, just the P wave slam sequence
but no S waves. So it's local and not big, kids. Take
notes, then move to Idaho.
