A magnitude 4.8 earthquake rattled California’s Humboldt County early Monday morning and was followed by three aftershocks, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The bigger quake struck 12 miles east of Petrolia with a depth of 19 miles at 3:20 a.m., the USGS said. Petrolia, a town of about 1,000 people, is 5 miles from the ocean. The epicenter was 35 miles south of the larger town of Eureka.

More than 370 people reported feeling the quake, including as far south as Mendocino and as far north as Crescent City. The National Weather Service said there was no tsunami danger.

A 4.1 magnitude aftershock hit in the ocean, several miles from the first quake, at 3:31 a.m. A second aftershock struck near the first big quake at 6:04 a.m. with a magnitude of 3.1, and a fourth magnitude 3.1 aftershock occurred in the ocean at 7:15 a.m.
