Magnitude 4.8 earthquake rattles Hawaii Amy Graff, SFGATE Feb. 15, 2023
A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit Hawaii Island at 9:27 p.m. local time on Feb. 14, 2023. USGS
A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck a few miles off the coast of the Big Island of Hawaii on Tuesday night, with shaking widely felt across the island and as far away as Oahu, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
"No tsunami is expected, though some areas may have experienced shaking," officials said.
The temblor struck on the Kau Coast at 9:27 p.m. local time at a depth of about 20 miles. The epicenter was 7.5 miles southeast of Pahala and 47 miles south-southwest of Hilo.
More than 1,300 people reported feeling shaking on the USGS’ self-reported “Did you feel it?” online survey.
The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency asked residents to check for property damage.
The earthquake did not impact volcanic activity at Kilauea or Mauna Loa, the USGS said.
Earthquakes are not uncommon near Pahala, and the USGS has been observing them since the 1960s.
