A magnitude 3.7 earthquake gave parts of the San Francisco Bay Area a gentle shake Monday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Some residents were shaken from their slumber as the tremor hit at 5:58 a.m. with a depth of 3.6 miles near San Martin, a small community in Santa Clara County, according to the USGS. The epicenter was about 7.7 miles northeast of Gilroy, 7.7 miles southeast of Morgan Hill and 26 miles southeast of San Jose.

Weak shaking was felt across the Santa Clara Valley, as far north as the San Francisco Peninsula, as far south as Monterey County and as far east as the East Bay, according to the USGS. There are 202 people who reported feeling the earthquake with the USGS's Felt Report.

The quake struck on the Calaveras Fault that last produced a significant earthquake in October 2007 with the magnitude 5.4 Alum Rock earthquake.

More information on this earthquake is available on the USGS event page. See the latest USGS quake alerts, report feeling earthquake activity and tour interactive fault maps in SFGATE's earthquake section.
