thank you all...just got power back...that quake was a really violent release of a fault...had just gone to bed and was falling asleep...felt the first whip of the house, a short pause and then a really strong wave ripped through, followed by a few more, each stronger than the last...it was the scariest eq i have experienced...wicked powerful thrusting...just hoped it wouldn't continue any longer...it was weird because it was totally dark but i could see the room being whipped back and forth...bodhi the dog dove under the bed beneath me...and then it was over...i only felt one small aftershock this afternoon...stepson was up when it happened in the samll apartmenty over my shop...he had a pot of water on the stove he was bringing to a boil...the quake hit, lights out and he smelled gas and thought the line had been damaged...so he came down to the main house and rousted us with his concern...went over there and tried to shut off the gass valve to the unit but it was stuck...scramble back to the garage to find a pair of pliers and got the gas turned off...went up to the apartment and it did smell heavily of gas...i noticed a bunch of water on the floor...then we realized the pot had sloshed water over the burner and put it out but the gas was still on, causing the smell...so big sigh of relief and back to bed, only to lay there for hours, all amped up from the whole experience...the epicenter was around 40-50 miles southwest of us...historic fernbridge which was a prominent feature of dustin hoffman's movie "outbreak" was severely damaged...haven't even had a chance to check out the local news yet...

It somehow copied this post of mine from when your area’s EQ happened (12/20?) and changed the date to today, put it at top of Most Recent Posts…..and okay, looking back in the posts to 12/20, it actually changed the date of my original post to today…!

It looked a lot like what I saw after Loma Prieta where some bridges and overpasses were actually tossed up, then landed back down ...just a few inches higher than they were before. All checked out..but it was a weird phenomenon.
We also saw pressure ridges in the asphalt pavements..as if worms had tunneled all over under the roads. Not cracks, but raised ridges.
There were a lot of weird things notice, but not expected...ridge tops that "exploded" as seismic waves amplified along the tops..stuff like that.
Hoping your area continues to recover and your nerves, too.

Glad and relieved to hear you and yours pulled out lucky of this shaker. Same happened to my husband August 5th wth the mag 7.0. He was boiling water in the back outdoor kitchen. The quake struck, we got out of the house. After the earth silenced down after 54 sec of violent shaking we returned in just to take hubbies pants cuz he was only in a bath towel. Luckily our son saw the stove still burning and the pan already smoking black. As we had to move uphills and staying there for more than 2 hrs till the tsunami warning was cut off. The Fernville Bridge is indeed severely damaged on one lane as far as I could see. Authorities were just checking on the damage. We could be here soon the next one. If not remembering wrong the south of Java is on the p and s wave shadow zone. And I had once this dream/vision of a dragon diving and rising out of the sea from Java to California. Not quite sure anymore of details. Stay further safe everyone. Thinking of all my Bopper sisters and bros.

Hoping Ryan reports in soon..news says there's a lot of power out up there right now. He's probably just fine (shaken, not stirred) and will be back on line as soon as he can. Word is, there are two injuries, no deaths.
California wake-up call, indeed. Ho ho ho, merry Christmas.
btw..took a quick look and it appears to be a transform quake, not a subduction fault quake. In other words, it's not the Cascadia fault.

It'll probably take until power comes back on where he lives, since he doesn't do cell phones at all...or maybe necessity will have him borrowing one... Hope that's soon!

Used to take walks right by that building and would look at it thinking I would not want to be working inside that building making powdered milk. Would picture in my mind that building collapsing due a earthquake. When I used to live there they were still using that place.

That's surprising..since old/brick buildings generally do not do well in large quakes. Surprising they were still using it regarding it's safety in earthquake country, and surprising it was still standing at all since there have been many previous quakes in the area of this size and greater that could have taken it down.
In the Loma Prieta quake, the old brick buildings still standing in the Pacific Garden mall were almost all heavily damaged. Some, like the historic Cooper House, met it's final demise in that quake.
Mother earth will continue to clear out those buildings that cannot bend and, instead, break apart.
Wood frame or steel frame is much better. What worries me is all the brick structures in the midwest. At some point (hopefully not for a long time), the New Madrid zone will produce a large quake and there are so many brick and mortar houses and buildings (many very old) that it's going to be devestating. California has upgraded "most" of it's old, brick buildings (or put a lot of $$$ reinforcing them if they are historic)...the mid west is quite a bit behind on that count.
Building codes make such a huge difference in minimal injuries/death or a lot of them.

Thank you Redhart for weighing in. I always appreciate your knowledge. Now I have to look up transform quake. LOL
Also, Ryan this thread is for you, so sending love and light.
On Earth Groans, a poster has the theory that the solar storms are affecting the magnetic core. Unscientifically, it also must have to do with the fact that the earth is closest to the sun during Winter Solstice. Let's hoping the magnetosphere holds it together.
A transform fault is "side to side" motion..generally vertical fault planes, more shallow..one side moves past the other (think of the San Andreas type)
Subduction fault is when a plate moves over/under the other with usually an oceanic plate moving beneath another (usually continental) plate. Fault surface area can run much deeper and wider and more powerful. If they are ocean based quakes, can create tsunamis.
There are other types of fault movement like "normal" (down dropping block..think of death valley), thrust faults (a fault shoving under another and moving a block up), oblique faulting (a mix up and sideways)
The moment tensor (the beachball) says this was a relatively shallow, transform (side to side) type fault that moved.
That's a better one to have than the Cascadia subduction moving..I mean, if you have to have one move at all.
btw, that area is often referred to as the "triple junction"..one of the most active seismic zones in the US due to the conjunction of three plates: The Pacific plate, the Gorda plate and the North American plate.
