Earthquake News 12/17/22: Texas

December 17, 2022 by Marc Szeglat

USA: Earthquake Mw 5.2 in Texas

Date: 12/16/22 | Time: 23:35:27 UTC | 32.20N ; 102.13 W | Depth: 5 km | Mw 5.2

West Texas was rocked by a magnitude 5.2 earthquake last night. According to the EMSC, the hypocenter was at a depth of only 5 km. The USGS, on the other hand, reported that it was at a depth of 5 miles. The epicenterwas located 23 km north-north-west of Midland. At the EMSC there are perception reports. Quake witnesses describe the tremor as the strongest they have ever felt in the region. The earthquake was also felt by local residents of Roswell. There were several aftershocks. The tremor occurred off continental plate boundaries and is referred to as an intraplate earthquake. The quake manifested itself in the Midland Basin, which in turn is part of the Permian Basin. The Permian Basin is a large sedimentary basin in the southwestern United States, extending west of Texas and southeast New Mexico. One of the most important oil field provinces in the USA lies in the basin.

Only last month there was a comparable strong earthquake of magnitude 5.4 in the region. This tremor caused several aftershocks, which can be seen in the cluster on the shakemap to the left of the current tremor marker.

Local news agencies quickly reported the quake. It was the fourth-strongest tremor ever recorded in the state of Texas, according to reporter Anthony Franze. A culprit for the quake was found just as quickly and is believed to have been triggered by fracking. Fracking is an oil extraction method in which fluids are forced underground under high pressure to flush the oil out of rock pores. The funding process is controversial because it can not only trigger earthquakes, but is also held responsible for major environmental pollution.
