I was going to pass on reporting today, after all there’s not much to note other than the eruption continues, but the dramatic slowdown in the flow’s progress is worthy of note in that it serves to temper all the talk of the sky falling..
There has been little change instrumentally.. ie everything is pretty much the same.. look at the 12/02 report for the instrument plots..

The one thing to note is the GPS shows continual diminishing of the changes being reported.
Whereas on the surface what has changed, and the only thing I see to make light of, is the predicted slowing down of the lava flow..
Note how the flow advanced considerably less in the 24 hours being reported here than in the mapped advance of the day before. And, in this report, there is no change, expansion, of the sides of the flow either. Now all the change is concentrated in the flow front, and that is not much. So, if we consider the volcano is erupting at the same magnitude as in previous days, we’re left to imagine more material is accumulating in a smaller area. In other words the terrain is flatter, the lava is thicker (more viscous), and is piling up on itself. And, in a sense, the road is getting further away in time..
One thing that is impressive is how wide that little red area on the map is. Look at the scale bar, in the upper left corner of the map, and realize that flow front is more than a half of a kilometer wide.
