Subject: Mauna Loa Eruption - 12/02/2022 a short update..

As I said in previous reports, all the geodetic signals are stabilizing.. and now it’s clear the seismicity is also becoming regular..

Here’s the trace for the last 48 hours on the closest station to the eruption site..

Notice how in the earlier period the tremor is slightly higher, but whereas in days past I have said things were lessening because there was a noticeable decline in tremor over time, now it appears the volcano has expended all the excess energy it took to begin the eruption and now is into a relatively steady state.. and there are almost no more eqs involved at all. I suspect this means we’re settling in for the long haul.. ie until the hydraulic head comes close to being exhausted this is the rate the open fissure is able to erupt in balance with all other forces.

Other things worthy of note..

Here's the initial geochemical results from first 48 hours of the eruption..

• glassy near vent
• small crystals of plagioclase and olivine at flow front as lava cools
• 6-6.8% MgO
• eruption temp 1156 C (2113 F)
• similar to past lava compositions
• no leftover lava from 1984 is apparent

And to visualize the onset of the event here’s a an interferogram showing deformation of Mauna Loa's Upper Northeast Rift through Nov. 29..

Otherwise.. a look at the summit tilt..

With its spike representing the onset of activity now tapering off considerably

And the GPS, vertical component

Showing how much height the volcano is losing as it’s magma chamber is draining (on the right side of the plot). To date it appears the mountain has lost close to a foot in height. You can clearly see the spike representing the onset of the eruption followed by a steady slowing down with each day's data point.

And the GPS measured distance across the summit caldera..

Which also shows some constriction after the initial spike at the eruptions onset, but not as dramatic as the vertical component.

As to the flow.. there hasn't been much change. It advances at something like 50 feet an hour.. but is more spreading, and piling up on itself..

*again, keep in mind, the data presented here is dynamic, and is updated regularly.. so eventually it will change outside the perimeters of this discussion..
