Magnitude 5.1 earthquake gives SF Bay Area a big shake

Amy Graff, SFGATE
Oct. 25, 2022

An earthquake shook the Bay Area on Oct. 25, 2022 with an epicenter near Mount Hamilton.
USGS/Handout

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake was felt widely across California's San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday.

The quake hit at 11:42 a.m. with a depth of 4 miles, just south of Mount Hamilton in the hills of east San Jose, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Shaking was felt as far north as Fairfield, as far east as Stockton and as far south as Salinas, the USGS said.

The USGS said the tremor struck on the Calaveras Fault.

Three smaller quakes shook Tuesday afternoon in the hills east of San Jose in the hours following that morning's 5.1-magnitude earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The larger quake struck at 11:42 a.m. and was centered about 12 miles east of San Jose and could be felt through much of the Bay Area.

The three that followed were in the same vicinity within a radius of about one mile and included a 2.9 magnitude quake at 11:47 a.m., one at 3.5 magnitude at 3:08 p.m. and another at 2.7 magnitude at 5:20 p.m.

No damages were reported from the three smaller quakes.

The 5.1 quake is the largest in the Bay Area since a 6.0 earthquake in the Napa area.

Residents around the region on social media reported feeling the jolt Tuesday morning. It was the largest quake on the northern end of the central segment of the Calaveras Fault since a 5.4-magnitude quake in 2007.

Many people also received advanced notification seconds before the quake happened via the MyShake smartphone app developed at University of California at Berkeley, according to the Governor's Office of Emergency Services.

BART officials held trains so crews could inspect trackways for possible damage, but cleared all service for normal operations by about 12:20 p.m. Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority light-rail service was also delayed for inspections following the quake but is back on schedule.

I have two kids still in the Bay area...both felt it.
One in the Santa Cruz mts felt it pretty good. The
other at work on the 5th floor of a building in Redwood
City felt it "lightly". I would have thought it would
be the other way around (Redwood City on
sediment...Santa Cruz mts is rock).

Daughter has a quake app...she's about 30 mi., because
of her inconsistant cell signal, she didn't get the
warning until it was already shaking. But--it did work
(sorta). Think the fault is her cell service rather
than the quake warning app.

Funny bounces.

All this being said, I've watched the Calaveras fault
for many years, and if anything, they were slightly
over due for this moderate. It roughly tosses at least
one this size every year with a very regular build up
pattern (which was present).

This is an unusual fault in that it follows a specific
buildup pattern you can actually crunch into a
mathematical formula. It worked for me 3 times down to
the day and spot...then I sent the formula to the USGS
seismologists who were very interested in it.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work for any other fault
(yet). Differences in the type of rock and friction
rate varies in other faults...variables that don't
match the calaveras.

Should be it's yearly--ya'll probably safe (at least
from the Calaveras) until she winds up again.

An earthquake just shook the Bay Area. Here's what to know about the obscure Calaveras Fault.
Amy Graff, SFGATE
Oct. 25, 2022

The Calaveras Fault runs through the hills east of San Jose and "is a mostly right-lateral, strike-slip fault," according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The San Andreas and Hayward faults get all the attention in the San Francisco Bay Area, but on Tuesday, the obscure Calaveras Fault made itself known.

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck on the fault that runs through the hills east of San Jose, rocking the region and reminding everyone that we live in earthquake country. “The location of the epicenter suggests that this earthquake occurred within the Calaveras Fault zone,” U.S. Geological Survey research geophysicist Annemarie Baltay said in a video posted on Twitter.

Turns out, the Calaveras Fault has the same capability to cause a ruckus as the two big-name faults.

“When we think about hazardous faults in the Bay Area, there are three primary faults, San Andreas, Hayward-Rodgers Creek and Calaveras,” said Richard Allen, director of UC Berkeley’s Seismology Lab. “Calaveras is one of the big three.”

A 2014 report from the USGS found those three faults are the most likely in the Bay Area to see a major earthquake in the future similar to the 1989 Loma Prieta tremor, which killed 63 people. Seismologists discovered that within a 30-year period, from 2014 to 2043, the odds of a magnitude 6.7 or larger earthquake occurring on the San Andreas Fault was 22%, on the Calaveras was 26% and on the Hayward-Rodgers Creek 33%.

The last major quake on the Calaveras Fault was in 2007 when a magnitude 5.5 hit near Alum Rock on Halloween. Before that, in 1984, the fault produced a magnitude 6.2 shaker near Halls Valley southwest of Mount Hamilton.

“It’s an area of seismicity, and these moderate earthquakes are what we’ve seen along this part of the fault in recent decades that cause light shaking and not a lot of damage,” said Stephen DeLong, a research geologist at the USGS Earthquake Science Center at Moffett Field. “It may be that we continue to see these moderate earthquakes, or it may be that this fault may participate in a larger earthquake in the future.”

The Calaveras and Hayward-Rodgers Creek faults are actually strands of the San Andreas Fault system, branching off from California’s intricate San Andreas network of faults. The Calaveras branches out from the San Andreas south of the Bay Area near Pinnacles National Park. It heads north, cutting through the town of Hollister, cutting into the hills east of San Jose, running right under Mount Hamilton and then through Pleasanton, San Ramon and the Walnut Creek area, DeLong said.

Tuesday’s quake struck just south of Mount Hamilton at 11:42 a.m. There were no reports of damage, but more than 21,000 people, from Central California to the North Bay, reported on the USGS website that they felt shaking.

probably not. This looks like it's regular pattern.

Course, you never know..but the chances are very low
this is a preshock to a larger. Very high that it's
just it's regular pattern (a moderate every year or so,
then it goes back to background building) for the
Calaveras.

That being said...there's also the Hayward and San
Andreas, Great Valley fault sequence, Rogers
fault...etc. So, how energy is transferred to a
different fault is yet to be determined.

But, for the Calaveras..this is most likely the main
event.

Um..yeah, I was 3 mi from the epicenter on that one
lol. Trust me, I remember.

The 1906 quake was in April, though.

I think the northridge quake was in January.

in 1857, the Fort Tejon quake (8+ mag) was also in
January.

1868 6.8(approx) hayward fault quake in east bay was on
October 21st

1954 7.3 Kern county quake was July 21st

July 6, 2019 7.1 Ridgecrest Quake (felt that one, too)

Feb. 9, 1971 6.5 San Fernando quake (Sylmar)

The big ones tend to jump around the calendar. No
month is truly safe, or more dangerous than others

Yes, I remember vividly. On OCT. 18th 1989, I awoke @7am
saying aloud that there's going to be an E-Q and it's
going to do allot of damage & it's going to be at least
a 7.0 mag. It was then I realized I was talking to my
poodle. At 5:04 p.m., THE WALLS WERE SHAKIN',THE EARTH
WAS QUAKING, MY MIND WAS ACHING, IT SHOOK ALL NIGHT
LONG!!! I was living in LOS ALTOS ON THE 2ND FLOOR NEAR
DE MARTINI'S produce market. (CUESTA & SAN ANTONIO RD.).

Holy shit Gspot. That's about as bad as Regan's bouncing bed Exorcist movie scene dream I once had. Only to find out as I woke up next night morning turning on the local news shows, and to my utter astonishment......hearing that there really actually WAS a magnitude 5> quake that occured during the night!

Yes REGAN , I bolted straight up & spoke as if I was
possessed to do so & after the quake hit I was like
BLANCHE in "BONNIE & CLYDE" (running outside with a
bandaged head wound & waving a spatula in her hand
screaming were all gunna die). I scare myself.

October 17th, 5:04pm.

The Santa Cruz clock tower was stuck at that time for a
couple years. Broke the clock.

If you woke up on the 18th saying it...that was deja
vu, not prediction lol.

The aftershocks did go on all night...and for a weeks
at lesser frequency. Our family slept outside in a
tent for three nights until those calmed a little, and
the power was restored. The house wasn't safe as it was
full of broken glass and no way to really vacuum it up
out of carpets and such without the electricity.
