Sept. 29, 2022

By now most of you know about the New Madrid Seismic Zone in Northeast Arkansas on the Arkansas-Missouri border that
seems to be ramping up on a daily basis.

Two days ago on Sept. 27, at approximately 3:30 in the morning near the state line of Missouri between the towns of
Maynard and Corning in Arkansas, the strongest quake was felt by residents in the surrounding area known as the Ozark
Plateau. The magnitude of the earthquake was 2.8 on the Richter scale and the epicenter had it measured at a depth of 6.7
miles, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Minor earthquakes happen in the area every year but over the last 30 days, there have been a total of 25 earthquakes in
the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The last time Arkansas dealt with a major earthquake was in 1811-1812 and the quake was felt
over an area of a million square miles as far away as Boston, Massachusetts.

Arkansas Prone for a Big One
Many scientists are saying the New Madrid Seismic Zone is prone to a big one that could cause massive destruction and
devastation. The question remains is not where but just a matter of when. Authorities feel as though the region is not
properly prepared if a major earthquake occurs in the area.

The article translated to me as I shared at the time it was written as past 30 days through the presentation (I agree) was oddly composed. Also
the article title stated NEAR the New Madrid seismic zone, it did not state ON the New Madrid seismic zone. Apologies on posting this I will try refrain
in the future on any such type of presentation in wording. The poorly worded article was written seemingly September 30th and comprised the past 30 days
time frame at the time it was composed. ~Eve

Hi eve, being in mid TN I feel most of them. however it is just one area in a line from the
St. Lawrence river valley through the New Madrid are and all the way
through to the El Paso TX and onward to the Baja off Mexico to the
under water of the San Andreas fault I watch. there has been a few swarms near El Paso
and many other areas along that line. it is funny I use to think the New Madrid fault
ran up and down the Mississippi river. the river is nearly dry and at the mouth of the river on the gulf
they are asking for relief as salty gulf waters are encroaching their fresh water supply.
Jim Berkland would note the water weight of dams caused ground tremors maybe the
lack of water in the river triggered the New Madrid quakes. my ex had relatives
that lived in West AK so those there got my attention then those in the OKC area.
to me it is the where abouts of the mid-continent fault. this also passes through where
US route 36 hits the Indiana-Illinois state line. many swarm quakes were there years ago.
just to mention where that line hits the SAF in the Baja gulf there was a good size quake there about a week ago.

no other evidence that this quake happened...

In the past 7 days, Arkansas had 1 quake of magnitude 2.2. There were also 3 quakes below magnitude 2.0 which people don't normally feel.

This article is a bit confusing. What do they mean by "the
strongest quake"??

It's not even really in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which
has had much larger quakes, several in the 4+ range, and is
75 miles away to the east.

Even for the immediate area (within 10 miles of this quake)
I'm find larger events in the historical catalog.

"Ramping up on a daily basis?"

The last quake anywhere in the area was nearly a month ago.
About 75 miles away near the town of New Madrid itself.

Again, confused.

um...yeah, thanks--was trying to figure that out, too.
lol

Sometimes they toss these stories to people who don't
really understand what they're talking about to write.

"Your the weather guy (medical guy, astronomy guy,
etc...), right? It's all science"

One of my pet peeves of earthquake reporting in the media
.

I doubt the link has a huge following so it's not like
it's a big thing I doubt anyone is panicking over the way
it's worded and it's not like EB has a huge audience.

I read it to mean the largest in the past 30 days.

EXCERPT:
...the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), located in southeastern Missouri, northeastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, western Kentucky and southern Illinois, is
the most active seismic area in the United States, east of the Rocky Mountains

https://dnr.mo.gov/land-geology/hazards/earthquakes/science/facts-new-madrid-seismic-zone

EXCERPT:
Earthquakes in the Illinois Basin - Ozark Dome Region
This large region borders the much more seismically active New Madrid seismic zone on the seismic zone's north and west. The Illinois basin - Ozark dome region
covers parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas and stretches from Indianapolis and St. Louis to Memphis
