Two days after two earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.4 and 4.3 struck near Santa Rosa, Calif., another small earthquake hit the San Francisco Bay Area — this time in Berkeley, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The magnitude 2.9 tremor struck at 2:41 a.m. on Thursday with a depth of 5.5 miles just behind the Fairmont Hotel-Claremont Club and Spa in Berkeley, according to the USGS map. The epicenter was 3.1 miles northeast of Emeryville and 4.6 miles north of Oakland.

Weak shaking was felt throughout the East Bay and San Francisco, and more than 900 people reported feeling the earthquake to the USGS.

The quake hit on the Hayward Fault that runs between San Pablo Bay to the north and Fremont to the south, passing through a highly populated area of the Bay Area, including the cities of Berkeley and Oakland, the USGS said.

The East Bay also saw a magnitude 2.9 quake on Sept. 11, the USGS said. The tremor hit at 10:31 p.m., with a depth of 6.2 miles near Piedmont, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The biggest quakes to recently hit the Bay Area occurred in the North Bay: a magnitude 4.4 tremor at 6:39 p.m. on Sept. 13 and a magnitude 4.3 only a minute later at 6:40 p.m. Both hit in the same area near Santa Rosa. The quakes struck on the Rodgers Creek Fault, which is part of the San Andreas system.

“The Rodgers Creek fault is part of the San Andreas system. The last big earthquake on it was in the 18th century,” said Lucy Jones, a California seismologist and author of “The Big Ones,” on Twitter. “It has a long term slip rate just under 1 cm/yr which puts it in the same class as Hayward, Garlock or San Jacinto.”

More information is available on these earthquakes on the USGS event page.

That they classify Rodgers with Garlock, almost a non-
event. What say you?
