The Rodgers Creek fault is part of the San Andreas
system. The last big earthquake on it was in the 18th
century.

Video from Santa Rosa of quake (including her dog running
for cover!). It looks like there was a preshock, then a
larger one.

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake gave California’s Wine Country a shake and was widely felt across the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday night.

The tremor hit at 6:39 p.m. at a depth of 4.6 miles near the Sonoma County city of Santa Rosa in the North Bay, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter was 1.8 miles south of Santa Rosa and 48 miles northwest of Berkeley. It was felt as far south as San Francisco and as far north as Clear Lake, according to the USGS’ ShakeMap. As of 7:15 p.m., more than 2,700 people had reported feeling the earthquake to the USGS.

Many hopped on social media to report feeling the quake.

“First earthquake I’ve felt since moving to CA almost 5 years ago,” wrote one Twitter user. “Needless to say I’m lightly shaken.”

“I’m in Santa Rosa and both my cats are under my bed,” wrote another. “I grew up with earthquakes, but it’s been… years. Could be decades?”

First time living upstairs during an earthquake. Franks and I RAN down the stairs which probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do but… we’re good. Now I have an excuse to get a new mirror. #earthquake pic.twitter.com/l3V0tZHbKn

The quake occurred on the Rodgers Creek Fault, which is part of the San Andreas system. “The Rodgers Creek fault is part of the San Andreas system. The last big earthquake on it was in the 18th century,” said Lucy Jones, a California seismologist who authored the book “The Big Ones,” on Twitter. “It has a long term slip rate just under 1 cm/yr which puts it in the same class as Hayward, Garlock or San Jacinto.”

There was no initial word on damage or injury resulting from the quake.

More information on this earthquake is available on the USGS event page.
