Recent satellite images show dramatic and significant morphological changes in the volcano's shape during the recent activity. Judging from the latest image after today's massive eruption (16 January) and comparing to previous images from 17 November and 7 January, it seems that most of the island is destroyed.

One might surmise there was a collapse of some sort to be able to create a trans-pacific tsunami like this. You don't get a wave by simply blowing off the top. You need water displacement of significance.
What the most likely scenario is that the magma chamber beneath the young island emptied itself.. then collapsed, then water flooded in to fill the emptied chamber.
Krakatoa did the same thing during it's big eruption, only to a much larger extent (was a massive chamber).
