I’m on the island, and we haven’t had the flood and landslide
destruction you’ve all seen thats occurring near Vancouver. The
worst of it on the island was the highway near Victoria, and it’s open
now for travel.
However, on Wednesday, Nov 17th, at noon, the Provincial Gov
declared a State of Emergency. And yesterday, Friday, they’ve
restricted travel for non-essential vehicles where the flooding and
slides occurred. As well as we have a 30 litre limit on buying gas (
home heating is NOT included in these restrictions.) These
restrictions are not province wide! They’re for the area affected, so
goods and gas can get through to stores. Gas is restricted here on
the island as well. I had fully gassed up on Thursday as I was
expecting this. These restrictions are on ( so far ) until December 1st.
It’s been amazing how people have come together to help each
other out , and especially the animals. For those who have
Facebook, you can view some of the damage as well as rescues of
animals here.
https://m.facebook.com/crisisresponse/?crisis_id=650867985908031

The other amazing thing is at this point, only 2 have died,, but there’s
still 3 missing.
Our gov is actually doing a bang up job, considering what they have
to deal with. Goods are getting through now. The concern now is
more rain moving in by Tuesday. The mayor of Abbotsford has order
a repair to a flood dike that became breached, and hopefully this will
be repaired over the next 2 days. That mayor has been use
excellent.
Many shelves in the stores are empty, yet other stores are doing fine.
It seems those stores who have dealt local with suppliers are doing
best. Hoarding had started by Tuesday/Wed.
Here’s the gov website with everything explained as far as the
restrictions. This is where to get the facts, not on any conspiracy
laden websites. No, we aren’t out of food, etc. No, the gov has not
stopped all travel through the province. And lady but not least, no, it
isn’t the end of the world 🙂

saddest thing to see these mostly dairy cattle stranded and dying. I watched a video where folks were trying to save a herd of dairy cows with boats, etc. in neck deep waters. Here's an update from the Guardian UK:

Sam Levin

Lana Popham, BC’s minister of agriculture, has just given an update about the crisis at farms, saying that “thousands of animals have perished”. More from her update:
“There will have to be euthanizations,” she said, adding that there were also animals who have survived and will need food in the next 24 hours.
Disaster relief funding will be made available for farmers.
The agricultural health lab in the Fraser Valley was flooded, compromising infrastructure that is used for disease testing for animals, and also for milk testing. Alberta and Saskatchewan are stepping up to provide testing.
“Farmers are desperately trying to find a safe, dry spot for their animals,” she said noting that many farmers who attempted rescues had to abandon their animals: “They are not in good shape by the time they get there ... The roads were disappearing beneath them.”
We’re developing routes so that veterinarians can access farms.”

it's grown very fast and now has a population of over 2 million so that's catastrophic for so many in these areas. We used to travel to BC when the kids were younger, it is a beautiful city but it's going to take a long time to restore rail service and so many roads are closed too. The city is running out of food too!

Worse yet, they expect another huge storm next week.

Live reports from the Guardian at the link.

are the two million isolated same as vancouver? are
they able to get food from the seaport? and with the
problems in the us with the cargo problems in la and
seattle? and now vancouver? and this is only north
america. other countries are having problems
themselves... and now the farmers are not able to ship
their grain and then the countries who are importing the
grain will not be able to feed their people or
livestock. this is a far reaching problem that no one
thought could happen but it is underway. and with
winter coming it will be difficult to fix roads, bridges
and railroads.

That's what several sites say. I read that the Canadian Air Force is going to be delivering goods to several cities that are cut off from floods.
I'm not sure if Canada has the same problems with supply via boat as we do. I'll try to find out for you.

So many dairy cows have perished in these floods, not sure if they will be able to save many herds from what I'm reading.

Good point about winter weather and fixing those roads, some are terribly damaged and/or swept plum away. They need our prayers that's for sure.
